COCKAPOO PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

So we’ve talked a lot about cockapoos here at Cockapoo Crazy, but one thing we have failed to cover in detail is their physical descriptions. Allow me to remedy that now.

What is a cockapoo?

A cockapoo (also called cockerpoos or spoodles) is the result of crossbreeding a Poodle (often the miniature ones) and a Cocker Spaniel. When breeders create these popular hybrid pets, they aim to keep the most desirable qualities of both dogs. This includes retaining the Poodles wavy coat and the Spaniels compact physique.

Cockapoos originated in the US and have become increasingly popular even though major kennel clubs do not recognise them as a breed.

A cockapoo has a sturdy, square build. You will notice that a cockapoos body measures about the same in length between its rump and chest bone, than in height from the ground to the highest part of its shoulder.

With its long coat and characteristic medium curls, you will need to groom and brush your cockapoo a few times a week to keep it looking neat and attractive. The length of the coat determines the overall look of the cockapoo, with some preferring the shorter coat of a hunting dog, and others letting the coat grow long and wavy. Either way, these dogs have very soft, practically hypoallergenic, hair – not the coarse fur found on most dogs. The coats come in a variety of colors, including brown, black, white, gray, and oftentimes a striking combination of those colors.

The size of a cockapoo is not determined by weight, but by height. Cockapoos range in height from toy and mini to standard sizes, depending on its parents. An adult cockapoo is a toy sized dog if its shoulder height is 10 inches or less, while a dog that is 11-14 inches at shoulder height is mini-sized. The standard sized cockapoo is 15 inches at shoulder height.

As a cockapoos overall build plays a role in its appearance, you may find significant weight differences between two similarly sized cockapoos. A general weight guideline for Cockapoos is that toy sizes should weigh less than 12 pounds, while a Mini usually weighs between 13 and 20 pounds. A standard Cockapoo generally weighs 21 pounds or more.
